Eco-Play with Rutabaga: Have Fun with Snow

No matter if you get actual snow this season or not, there are so many wonderful ways that you and your kids can play, learn, and experience snow!

Snowy Sensory Bin

What you need:

  • Snow - either real or fake (Our preferred “fake” snow is desiccated coconut! You can also use shredded paper to keep it eco-conscious and plastic free.)

  • A bin

  • Winter items - jingle bells, pinecones, pine needles, cranberries, acorns, eco-friendly glitter, arctic animals, etc.

Instructions:

  1. Add the “snow” to the bin. Then either hide the items in the snow or leave them in bowls for your children to add as desired!

  2. Add some scoops to amp up the fun!

Painted Pinecones

What you need:

  • Pinecones

  • White paint

  • Paint brushes

  • (Optional) Biodegradable glitter

Instructions:

  1. Forage pinecones with your kids!

  2. Bake the pinecones at 300 in the oven for 30-45 minutes depending on size to dry them out.

  3. Let cool.

  4. Paint the tips of the pine cones with white paint and sprinkle with glitter before paint dries.

  5. Let dry. Then use to decorate!

Play Dough Snow People

What you need:

  • White play dough - we recommend using this recipe

  • Biodegradable glitter

  • Buttons, sticks, beads, and other items to decorate your snow people

Instructions:

  1. Make the play dough following the above recipe.

  2. If desired, add in glitter and mix thoroughly.

  3. Roll play dough into balls and stack on top of one another.

  4. Place decorations in a bowl for your kids to add!

Paper Snowflakes

What you need:

  • Paper

  • Scissors

Instructions:

  1. Begin with a square piece of paper. Fold it in half to create a large triangle. Fold it in half again to make a smaller triangle. Cut a variety of shapes into the sides of the triangle and round the edges. Open up the cut triangle and you will have a paper snowflake!

  2. Hang up on the windows for decorations or string together for a garland.

Make Homemade Snow

What you need:

  • Blender

  • Ice Cubes

Instructions:

  1. Pop some ice cubes in your blender and make snow at home!

  2. Use the snow as part of a science experiment (hot v. cold, learning about water, how snow floats) or in a sensory activity.

Be sure to tag us using #RutabagaPhilly when you do one of these activities! Enjoy!
